According to Trip Advisor, Gilbert's Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch has been ranked #1 thing to do in Gilbert.  Dedicated in 1999, the Preserve is a 110-acre wetland and wildlife sanctuary that supports various wildlife and plant life.  With 7 ponds, 1 recreational fishing lake, 1 floating boardwalk, 3 overnight campsites, 2 reservable ramadas, a children's play area, ethnobotanical garden, and a simulated dinosaur fossil dig pit, the Preserve offers fun for everyone.

The Desert Rivers Audubon organization conducts free Family Bird Walks between 8am and 1pm on the third Saturday of every month from October through March.
